Year 5 Class Page

Welcome to our Year 5 class page. We hope that this page will give you lots of useful information about what we will be doing over the year.

Mr Unsworth is the class teacher in class 7, Miss Bradley is the class teacher in class 8 and Miss Hickling is the class teacher in Class 9.

Our teaching assistants are: Mrs Cookson, Miss Umera, Miss Shena (Mat Leave), Miss Ullah and Mrs White.

Holiday – Music Activities From Oldham Music Service

Take a look at the two pages below. There are lots of musical activities to choose from this week and throughout the summer holidays. The first page has easy activities and the second page has some more challenging ideas.

There are some activities that you can do without the internet and some with links to YouTube to inspire you to create some music.

Still working during book week

Even though it’s been Book Week, year 5 have worked hard to keep up with their Maths & English work. Take a look!

Potato people

Year 5 made some interesting potatoes. Well done to Hafizah who made one of C9’s favourites: Winnie the Pooh. Well done to Haadi who made Mrs. Lynch’s favourite Wally!

BBC Radio2 500 words

Back in January, Class 9 entered the Radio 2’s 500 words story writing competition. They had to write a story in 500 words or less. Judging is now underway, but Mrs Hickling received this certificate to share with you all! Well done Class 9 – Let’s see if anyone makes the finals! #Radio1 #500words #CreativeWriting

A Life

A Life visited us on Tuesday for a day filled with activities. Here’s us getting active on their Get Fit course!

A Life – in the classroom

Back in the classroom with A-Life to learn about the dangers of drugs, alcohol and cigarettes. We played a game with jelly beans to help us understand how dangerous drugs can be, as you don’t always know what you are taking. We also wore some drunk goggles to simulate what being drunk is like.

Viking Houses

First they drew the houses in their books as 3D shapes. Then they had a go at making a net for a 3D shape. Finally, the children used art straws to make their frames.

Vikings – Olaf

Year 5 were treated to a visit from Olaf the Viking! They learnt about Viking games, longships, gods, goddesses, raiding, pillaging, trading and Viking warfare. We had a fantastic two days and look forward to hopefully inviting Olaf back to our school again very soon!

CPR & Orienteering 6th Feb 2020

Class 8 had the very special opportunity to take part in the very 1st CPR and orienteering event hosted by @OfficialOACT learning such an important life lesson in CPR and also getting to navigate around Oldham Athletics football ground.
 

Viking poo – 6th Feb 2020

In History, we dissected some Viking poo to learn about what the Vikings ate. We found some horrible discoveries including fish bones in our Viking poo! We really enjoyed getting hands on with history.

Vikings – paganism

We’ve been learning about the Vikings in History. As part of this we also learnt about Paganism, a religion which the Vkings did follow. Here are some of the things we learnt.

English work – Spring term

Maths with counters

In year 5 we have been doing divison for the past few weeks. Here’s our work using the counters to help us solve problems.

Multiplication problem using the formal method

Haadi showed us how to attempt a multiplication problem using a formal method, while we reviewed the grid method. In Year 5 we encourage the children to choose methods which suit the problems and themselves.

Flower dissection

Year 5 have been learning about the reproductive cycle of the plant. Take a look at our dissections!

 

The Boy at the Back Of The Class author at Oldham Library

Year 5 and 6 went to meet the author of The Boy at the Back Of The Class author at Oldham Library. We heard stories from the author of her time working in Calais and volunteering with refugees.

First Aid – St John’s

Year 5 and Year 6 had a fantastic time learning First Aid from St John’s Ambulance Service. She was very impressed with our skills and our concentration.

Dragon’s Den – 3rd December

This week has been Enterprise Week. We decided to make slime. Take a look at our work.

Miss Bradley managed to get someone who works for NASA to answer our questions! Thanks very much Derek for taking the time to answer our inquisitve Year 5 children.

Road safety day – 24 November 2019

Year 5 had a fantastic day practicing their road safety knowledge. They were taken out by the council and shown skills in keeping safe.

Space Race timeline

We have been looking at the history of Space in topic. We created a timeline to order the events of the Space Race!

Wonderdome

We created some poppy wreathes for remembrance day. We also had a 2 minute silence at 11 o clock to remember those people who lost their lives.

Newspaper writing – 8th Nov 2019

Year 5 have been preparing to write a newspaper. They have been learning about relative clauses and parenthesis. Class 9 seemed really excited by this as they joined in with the relative clause song!
It’s not just all English learning in Year 5 – We’re learning about multiples and factors in Maths.

Halloween maths challenge

Class 9 took on this Halloween Maths challenge where they had to spot the different factors of each number! They also had to find prime numbers to make a variety of spooky pictures.

Rocket world

Thanks to Rocket World for joining us in Year 5 again. It was a fantastic experience and a really enjoyable afternoon where the children got to meet people from Malyasia, Pakistan, Iran, Italy and Germany!

Alien soup – 15 October

Class 9 made alien soup by mixing sand, salt, water and paperclips. They then had to seperate the solution back into its soluable and insoluable materials.

Stop Racism Hands – 15 October

Class 8 made some fantastic Stop Hate hands to show racism, and other forms of hatred will not be accepted in our school.

Greek Day – 8 October

Year 5 had a Greek Day provided by Past Productions.

We had a fantastic day are the companies feedback says they had a great day too:

“It was great meeting a new cohort of children and we loved how they threw themselves into the shows and the workshops afterwards. The children were polite and were all saying thank you and goodbye at the end of the day which was lovely. It was also nice to bump into some of Y6 who remembered us from last year and wanted to talk to us in the breaks! We definitely look forward to coming back and working with the children again in the future.” –

Oldham pledge – 3 October

Class 9 got to attend the Oldham Health Fair as part of their work towards the Oldham Pledge. They took part in a variety of activities. Have a look!

Computing – 1 October 2019

Class 9 had an extra special computing lesson on the Ipads today. Take a look at what they got up to.

Celebrating Differences – 1 October 2019

This half term Year 5 have been learning about Celebrating Difference in PSHE. This week they have learnt what racism is and how to combat it. They watched Joe & Megans story, to learn more about how racism can effect you.

“I don’t understand how people can be so cruel – they were just children.”
“It suprised me that Megan hurt herself because she didn’t like her skin colour”
“No one deserves to be treated the way Joe & Megan were!”

“Racism is wrong. No one should be bullied or hurt because of their skin colour.”
After watching the video, the children made miniature post it note posters with antihate messages. Take a look at them!

Dissolving materials

Class 9 had a go at dissolving different materials to make solutions! Corn flour really caused some questions….

Jabberwocky based poems – 27 September 2019

In Year 5 we have been writing poetry based on the Jabberwocky. Here is our class attempt!

We had a go at working out some problems in our Maths lesson. We worked in teams to find the numbers.

Music Day – 26 September 2019

Class 9 (Year 5) took part in the BBC Music Day warm up. We’ve got some fantastic singers in our midst!
